At 80 years old, Anthony came to Eleusinia with a quiet courage that continues to inspire us. On the grass at the retreat, the ordinary world around him transformed. He described how the blades beneath him shifted into intricate patterns, like a living carpet laid out by his mind itself. The sky deepened with color, the hillside trees seemed to leap forward, and the entire landscape took on a new vibrancy. It was one of those quintessential psilocybin moments, where the familiar becomes extraordinary.
For the Eleusinia staff, this vision of patterned grass is tied to another unforgettable memory: each time we checked in on Anthony during ceremony, he would wave us away with a thumbs up and a grin. He was so immersed in his experience, so at ease and joyful in that moment, that he didn’t want to be interrupted. At 80, he had found something that made him feel alive, curious, and deeply present.

Choosing Courage Over the Familiar
Anthony came to the retreat after decades of living with anxiety and treatment-resistant depression. Traditional medications had failed him, leaving him searching for another path. At his age, stepping onto an airplane to travel to a foreign country, and saying yes to psychedelics for the very first time, was no small risk. Yet Anthony chose to be brave. “Sometimes in your life you just have to be brave and take a risk,” he reflected, “and in this case I was handsomely rewarded.”
A Release Long Buried
That reward unfolded in many ways. He spoke about the support he felt at every step, from ceremony preparation with yoga and meditation, to the care of the staff who sat with him during moments of emotion. He described tears flowing freely as memories of his children and his partner surfaced, emotions he had kept buried for decades. For Anthony, this release was like “a warm shower washing me, bringing up some of the things I’ve kept inside for a very long time.”
A Shift in Priorities
He left the retreat with a renewed sense of clarity about what matters most. “I realized my priorities are going to change,” he said. “It’s those relationships that are really important, and I’m going to put more effort into them. That in itself is priceless.” He also discovered a new way of relating to his mind: no longer as an adversary fueling anxiety, but as a partner to his heart and soul.
Embracing New Experiences
Even beyond psilocybin, Anthony tried the DMT session, which he likened to stepping inside a kaleidoscope of unimaginable colors. He also embraced the ice bath challenge with humor and courage, proving that new experiences can still thrill and inspire at any stage of life.
A Story That Inspires at Any Age
Anthony’s story is a reminder that it is never too late to choose healing. His age did not limit him, but instead gave his journey greater depth and meaning. His courage to say yes opened the door to joy, gratitude, and connection, and his journey is one that will inspire many others considering their own step toward change.
