Living in Constant Pain
Johnny describes himself as “every man in his fifties” who was stuck on every level. Years of chronic pain had left him broken. He survived three heart attacks, lived with debilitating migraines, endured multiple surgeries, and carried the weight of unrelenting grief. When he arrived at Eleusinia, he was skeptical but desperate. Western medicine had kept him alive, but it had not given him relief. As he put it, “I was at a crossroads on all three levels that you could be on. There was no relief.”
A Disappointing Start
Johnny came expecting to face his trauma head-on. Instead, the mushrooms gave him something different: they took away his pain. His first macrodose experience was not what he imagined. He watched others weep, scream, and transform around him, while he felt only disappointment and doubt. “This didn’t work for me,” he thought.
The Turning Point
The next morning, everything changed. Johnny woke up and realized that for the first time in months, the searing pain in his shoulder was gone. Level seven agony had been replaced with zero pain. He stretched, shaved for the first time in months, and told the group, “I shaved the pain beard.” Chronic pain had kept him from even that small act of self-care. He knew then that the medicine had worked on a deeper level than he could have understood in the moment.

Releasing Decades of Trauma
That was the beginning of a transformation. Through psilocybin and later DMT, Johnny confronted decades of trauma that had been locked away since childhood. He released sobs that had been buried for 50 years. He learned that healing does not always come the way we expect, but it does come. As Johnny said, “The medicine was the brain surgeon, not me. I thought I knew everything and I didn’t know anything.”
A Lesson in Surrender
Johnny’s story is a reminder that psychedelic medicine does not always unfold in the way we plan. Sometimes it bypasses the stories we tell ourselves and goes straight to the heart of what needs healing. For Johnny, that meant liberation from chronic pain and the beginning of emotional release after a lifetime of holding it in.
