An Ordinary Life, An Unsettling Feeling
Howard is a business owner in his forties. He describes himself as a regular guy, someone who had never smoked, never drank, and never tried drugs of any kind. Yet, despite doing all the right things in life, he found himself increasingly unsettled, weighed down by a sense that something was missing. That sense of disconnection led him to Eleusinia – not once, but twice. His first visit to Eleusinia was about facing pain and confusion. His second was about going deeper, exploring with curiosity, and discovering a new way of living. Together, those two retreats reshaped his understanding of himself and gave him the courage to live more authentically.

In Tears on the Plane
In his own words, Howard arrived at his first retreat in tears on the plane. He had already tried talk therapy and other traditional routes, but he needed something more. What he discovered at Eleusinia was a safe, structured space where he could let go of his defenses and open himself to a profound inner journey. “It really did connect the dots,” he says. “I felt peace. I felt grounded. For the first time in years, I wasn’t taking everything so personally.”
Tools That Carried Him Home
For a man who had never touched psychedelics before, the leap was extraordinary. And yet, Howard found that psilocybin gave him tools he could bring home such as breathwork, meditation, and a deeper compassion for himself. For a while, those practices carried him. But as months passed, he drifted away from them. He felt something pulling at him again, urging him to go deeper.
Returning with Courage
So he returned. Howard’s second retreat was not born of crisis, but of curiosity and commitment. This time, he wanted to explore further, to see what else was waiting for him. With the trust he had already built with the Eleusinia team, Howard found the courage to let go even more fully. In one session, he described being reborn, rolling in the grass for hours, overwhelmed with gratitude and love. “All the love in the world can come from inside you,” he realized. “I just need to have the courage to be myself.”
A Thanksgiving Tradition
Courage became the word that defined his journey. Every Thanksgiving, Howard chooses a single word to guide his year. The year he first came to Eleusinia, it was “metamorphosis.” After his second retreat, he chose “courage.” As he put it, “Nothing can stop me from having a beautiful life. And that takes courage.”
Ordinary, Yet Transformative
Howard’s story is not about being extraordinary. It is about being ordinary, and daring to step into the extraordinary. It is about a business owner in New England who realized that sometimes the most courageous thing you can do is to admit that you need more, and to seek it. His two visits to Eleusinia show how returning to the work can deepen the healing and reveal new layers of strength.
