Leaving the Amish Community
What does it mean to leave behind everything you’ve ever known – your faith, your family’s traditions, your entire worldview – and begin again? For Jacob, the answer came only after years of struggle, isolation, and finally, the courage to step into something radically new. His journey reveals the powerful intersection of psychedelics and deconstruction.
Jacob grew up in the Amish community, surrounded by strict rules, fear, and shame. Even after his family left the Amish when he was 18, life didn’t suddenly open up with freedom. Instead, he found himself thrown into a world he didn’t understand – trying to catch up on technology, social norms, and the broader culture, while still living under the weight of fundamentalist Christian teachings and purity culture.
“I was really searching for safe people to be around,” Jacob recalled. “But my parents weren’t safe, and I didn’t feel safe in my own body.”

Struggling With Trauma and Isolation
That lack of safety haunted Jacob through adulthood. He became a people pleaser, battled anxiety, and pushed down pain until it nearly consumed him. Even as he began learning about trauma, the intellectual knowledge couldn’t reach the deeper wounds. Therapy helped, but he still felt stuck. Marriage only intensified the pressure, leaving him feeling more overwhelmed and desperate.
“I got to the point where I was like, I have to try something else. It’s just not working. I’m so stuck.”
Discovering Psychedelics
That “something else” turned out to be psychedelics. After hearing respected voices talk about their benefits, Jacob began searching for a safe, professional retreat, and found Eleusinia. His story highlights how psychedelics and deconstruction can work together, allowing someone to not only leave behind rigid systems of belief but also to begin building a new foundation of authenticity and safety.
First Experiences: Wonder and Challenge
Jacob’s first psychedelic experience was both magical and deeply challenging. He described moments of childlike wonder, lying in the grass and laughing freely, but also the crushing weight of loneliness and the terror of facing feelings he had always pushed down.
“It felt like everything I had been avoiding my whole life was right there in front of me. And it was overwhelming.”

Finding Safety
But the journey didn’t end there. With each session at Eleusinia, Jacob began to feel something new: safety. During his second macrodose, he remembers laying his head in a guide’s lap under an umbrella and realizing, for the first time, that he could simply rest.
“I don’t think I’ve ever felt that safe. It was like being in a cave, looking out at the world, and it didn’t matter what happened because I felt safe.”
Reconstruction: A New Foundation
That sense of safety began to ripple outward – into his marriage, his relationships, and even his faith. Jacob describes himself now not just as deconstructing, but reconstructing: building a life on authenticity, gentleness with himself, and a faith rooted in trust instead of fear. His wife noticed the difference immediately:
“She told me, ‘You’re so different. This is insane.’”
Jacob’s story is a powerful reminder that leaving behind a rigid system of belief is not just about breaking away, it’s about finding the courage to rebuild. And for him, psychedelics became a bridge into that reconstruction. His journey shows how psychedelics and deconstruction can meet to open the door into a more authentic life.
At Eleusinia, we honor the privacy of our guests. Our podcast is always audio-only, often using pseudonyms, and recorded weeks or months after visits, never during retreats. Jacob’s voice, shared in his own words, is a gift to anyone navigating the difficult path of deconstruction and seeking healing.
