Sergey’s Dance with Resilience

Ballroom dancer Sergey shares his near-death, healing, and joy rediscovered at Eleusinia. A story of resilience, loss, and transformation.

Growing Up in a Collapsing World

Sergey is a professional ballroom dancer who grew up in the collapse of the Soviet Union. His early life was marked by instability and oppression. But dance offered him a way out – a rhythm, a discipline, and a sense of joy that kept him safe when so many around him were pulled into darker paths.

A Life-Changing Accident

At 14, everything changed. A summer dive into the sea left him with a broken neck, instant paralysis, and a near-death experience. Sergey recalls, “I remember inhaling the water, the pain, and then suddenly -peace. I saw simple images of my friends and moments at the dance studio. That’s what life was: the small, beautiful things.” Against every medical prediction, Sergey not only walked again, but returned to the dance floor within months.

Loss, Survival, and the Search for Joy

His journey carried him far from his small town in Far East Russia to a life in the United States. Along the way, he endured the grief of losing his mother, the dissolution of a marriage, and the crushing weight of joylessness, despite all he had survived. As Sergey explained, “I knew I had so much to be grateful for, but I couldn’t feel it. Happiness felt out of reach.”

Discovering Eleusinia

That’s when he found Eleusinia. In this podcast episode, Sergey opens up about his first psychedelic experience at the retreat. He describes it as a place of seamless care, where he could finally let go of control and rediscover joy. “I realized it’s all in my head. My brain was projecting old models of trauma over and over. I could finally let them go.” The result? A profound shift in how he experiences life, fatherhood, and love.

A Story of Transformation

Listening to Sergey speak, you’ll hear not just a story of survival, but of transformation. His reflections are tender, candid, and deeply human. He leaves us with a reminder: “Every difficult event led me somewhere better. Would I undo it? No. Because it gave me the life I have now, and I wouldn’t change that.”
